What is a scab?

A scab is the hard surface of dried blood that forms over a cut or wound during the healing process. When the skin is injured, a complex biological response occurs, which includes bleeding. Platelets in the blood aggregate at the injury site, and along with clotting factors, they form a temporary plug to stop the bleeding. As the blood dries out, it forms a crust, which is what we refer to as a scab.

The presence of a scab is important as it protects the underlying tissue while it heals, creating a barrier to prevent infection and further injury. As healing progresses, the scab will eventually fall away naturally as the skin underneath repairs itself.

Identifying a scab correctly is essential in understanding the body's healing processes and maintaining proper wound care.
